Meditation and the Skeptic

Meditation and the Skeptic

How one of America's leading meditation teachers convinced a jaded TV newsman to meditate and become 10% Happier  SOLD OUT

It seems like everyone is talking about mindfulness and meditation nowadays, from the cover of Time magazine to a member of the US Congress to corporate leaders. But is meditation realistic for those of us with demanding jobs and ambitious goals? Is compassion incompatible with high-stakes, competitive professions? Can meditation really make you happier? Join Dan Harris, author of the New York Times bestseller: 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing my Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works --A True Story, as he explores these questions and more with his friend, one of the country’s most renowned meditation teachers, Joseph Goldstein. There will be a book signing with the presenters following the program. Cost: $25 pre-registration ($19 + $6 registration fee), $30 at the door.

Instructor Bio

Dan Harris is an ABC News reporter and Nightline co-anchor. Harris reported on the mass shootings in Newtown, Aurora and Tucson, and has covered natural disasters from the earthquake in Haiti to Myanmar to New Orleans. He has also reported on combat in Afghanistan, Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank, and has made six visits to Iraq. Domestically, Harris has led ABC News' coverage of faith, with a particular focus on the evangelical movement. Harris' book, 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Really Works — a True Story, a New York Times bestseller, was published in March 2014. In it, Harris recounts how—with the help of various mental health professionals, religious leaders, self-help gurus, and news industry mentors—he stopped using drugs, discovered the benefits of meditation, and resolved the apparent conflict between meditation-induced equanimity and the aggressive competitiveness required for success as a TV-news journalist.

Joseph Goldstein has taught Buddhist meditation worldwide since 1974. A co-founder and guiding teacher of the Insight Meditation Society (IMS), he also helped envision and establish the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies and IMS's Forest Refuge center. The author of One Dharma, his latest title is Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Awakening.
