The Art of Nonprofit Fundraising

This course dispels the notion that fundraising is only for those with nerves of steel. While it is a critical activity for non-profit sustainability, fundraising is also fulfilling and rewarding.  Participants will learn the basic techniques of donor development and how to create and implement effective programs reflecting their organization's values and financial objectives by reviewing the menu of possible fundraising techniques. Tactics such as board engagement, direct mail, social media, events, individual donor cultivation and making the "ask" are covered.  Participants also strategize and develop customized fundraising plans that can be put into practice in their non-profits.

Required Textbook:  Fundraising for Social Change by Kim Klein, 6th ed, Jossey-Bass (4th or 5th editions are acceptable).

Certificate: This course can count toward earning the certificate Nonprofit Fundraising Certificate.

Nonprofit Certificate Fundraising Courses are subject to meeting minimum enrollments one week prior to the start of the course. In the event the course is cancelled, completion of the two-course certificate is delayed. Nonprofit Fundraising Certificate courses are not offered every semester.

The Art of Nonprofit Fundraising (NCFX 802.01) is postponed to:  11/17/12, 11/18/12 and 12/1/12.

Saturday, 11/17/12 and Sunday 11/18/12 from 9 am to 4:30 pm, with a 1/2 hour break for lunch. (Total class time for the first two days is 7 hours each day.)  On 11/17/12 and 11/18/12 the course will meet in University Hall (UNH), room 1775. 

Saturday, 12/1/12 from 9 am to 3:30 pm, with a 1/2 hour break for lunch.  (Total class time for the third day is 6 hours.)  On 12/1/12, the course will meet in St. Robert's (STR) Room 237.  Please phone 310 338 2812 or email for information.

Instructor Bio

A visionary leader with a diverse background in non-profit and corporate management with an entrepreneurial point of view, William Moreno is a seasoned executive and fundraiser.  William currently serves as Development Director for Alcott Center Mental Health Services, Los Angeles. He previously led the Mexican Museum, San Francisco and the Claremont Museum, Los Angeles. William approaches the myriad facets of development,  strategic planning, marketing, media relations with a pragmatic perspective.  He has led fundraising efforts and major donor “asks” - securing in excess of $12M in private and public commitments and planned gifts of $10M and directed capital fundraising efforts for a $30M building campaign. William is a graduate of the National Association of Latino Arts and Culture Leadership and the Grassroots Fundraising Institute programs. He serves as a Coach and Consultant for The Center for Cultural Innovation and CompassPoint Non Profit Center. He is the Board President of LACE, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions; Founding Board Member, Make Music LA and Advisory Board member for the California Association of Museums.
