In Love I am More God: The Mysticism of Meister Eckhart
Course Status Not Yet Available
Course Code RELX823.2451337
Description Description: This course examines the mysticism of Meister Eckhart (ca. 1260-1328), a Dominican teacher and preacher. Though controversial in his life-time, Eckhart has exerted enormous influence on contemporary spirituality, theology, and philosophy. His dynamic mystical theology also serves as a fruitful avenue for inter-religious dialogue with Buddhism and Hinduism. This course focuses on Eckhart’s notions of love, detachment, action and contemplation, living without a why, and mystical union. It, further, discusses his democratization and secularization of mysticism. Moreover, it puts Eckhart’s mystical thought in conversation with some tenets of Thomas Merton’s thought. This course may have particular appeal to students with an interest in mysticism and spirituality. Open to all.
